Entry to the place is free, if there is an exhibition there will be ticket, and it depends on the exhibition. Good for rainy and winter day events you can be in little warm.
Can you elaborate on how the hours were wasted? Im thinking of flying up one morning, getting in as early as possible and then flying out of Melbourne that night. But i'm worried that might not be enough time to enjoy the show if i book the 10am Saturday session?

I arrived at 1pm ,during the week , I was lucky it was quiet , I was there 2.5 hours then the show upstairs with the costumes does not take long . But if you have time, the digital imaging show for free also takes as long as you want to spend there. It's a great space there around Fed square.
