Hurricane Milton made landfall on Siesta Key on the Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday night as a major Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds as the state has endured an assault of nearly 120 tornado warnings throughout the day.

Hurricane Milton dropped to a Category 4 early Wednesday as it churns toward Florida's west coast. The National Hurricane Center had predicted it would likely weaken, but remain a major hurricane when it makes landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Hurricane Milton was located about 50 miles southwest of Tampa. The storm is moving northeast at 15 mph.

Predicting the precise landfall location of a hurricane can be a difficult endeavor, even hours before landfall happens. Such is the case with Milton. Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center have been fairly consistent over the past few days in predicting that Milton’s landfall will occur somewhere on a 60-mile stretch of Florida’s Gulf Coast from Tampa Bay to Sarasota.

On 5 October, Hurricane Milton began life as a tropical storm in the south west of the Gulf of Mexico. The next day, its wind speed started to rapidly intensify – and by 7 Octob
