Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has launched a new investigation into Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) feature

Driving' appears to struggle in low visibility situations and has led to four crashes, including at least one death. Now it's under investigation.

A federal investigation into Tesla was announced Thursday after one person was injured, and one died after a crash involving a self-driving Tesla.

NHTSA said the investigation will examine the system’s ability to function in reduced-visibility conditions.

NHTSA initiated the investigation after four crashes involving Tesla vehicles with FSD engaged during low-visibility conditions, such as sun glare, fog, or airborne dust. One of these crashes resulted in a pedestrian fatality, while another involved a reported injury.

Tesla’s FSD has been installed in some 2.4 million vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into Tesla on Thursday, reports the Associated Press. Though every preventable death is a tragedy, not every death should trigger a federal investigation and potential recall of overwhelmingly safe technology.
