Jerry Seinfeld walked back his claim that the political correctness of the “ extreme left ” ruined comedy ― and he did it with a skiing metaphor. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

Jerry Seinfeld is addressing his previous comments about the current state of comedy — and he admits he’s sorry for his words. During a recent sit-down on Breaking Bread with Tom Papa, the Seinfeld alum confessed, “There were two things that I have to say I regret saying and that I have to take back,” per Deadline.

Likening the job of a comedian to that of a “champion skier,” Seinfeld says that society “can put the gate anywhere on the mountain and [comedians are] going to make the gate” because if you don’t, “you’re out of the game.” Perhaps it’s never too late to learn that if the audience isn’t laughing, maybe the joke is the problem, not the audience.
