A beloved holiday tradition returns to the East Village. The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is happening from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Pets and their owners will walk along Avenue A from 13th Street to 7th Street.

The 34th annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade took place in New York City on Oct. 19 The hounds are celebrating Halloween early.

On subways and sidewalks, at the park and the café, dogs bring smiles to the faces of New Yorkers, said Leah Tanner, who set up a booth for the dog fashion brand Wild One along the parade route, giving out tennis balls and treats.

This year’s Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade featured no prizes, no judges and no competition, but the costumed dogs and their owners came out anyway. Dogs dressed as the New York Liberty, Moo Deng and Charli XCX paraded down the streets of the East Village.

The 2020 parade was virtual, and 2021’s edition returned to the amphitheater in East River Park, which offered ample room, Borduin said. But after a major flood-resilience renovation project began at that park, the event had to return to Tompkins in 2022.

The annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., but this year dogs and their owners march down the parade route on Avenue A. This year will be the parade's 34th year. It is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21.
