On Tuesday, the restoration of one of the Vatican Museums ‘ most prized artworks was unveiled. The Apollo Belvedere is a marble sculpture of the eponymous Greek god dating back to the 2nd century CE.

Experts added a carbon fiber pole to help anchor the "Apollo Belvedere," which had developed cracks along the legs and knees. Now, the looming Roman sculpture is finally back on display

The Vatican Museums unveiled on Tuesday a restoration of one of the crown jewels of their collection, a 2nd century marble sculpture of the Greek god Apollo that has inspired generations of artists and poets.

The Vatican Museums on Tuesday unveiled the restoration of the celebrated second-century "Apollo Belvedere" sculpture following five years of work. For the Vatican Museums' director Barbara Jatta, "the main challenge was to have the courage to close access to such an important icon for our museums".

The restoration of Apollo Belvedere faced several challenges before its official unveiling on Oct. 15, including the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
